Institute of Optoelectronic Technology (IOET), Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) was established in March, 1997. During the duration of the ninth five-year plan and the tenth five-year plan, more than eighteen millions RMB have been invested and now there are 1500 m2 area of rooms in IOET, including four experimental platforms and eight laboratories. Most of these laboratories are equipped with advanced equipments.

Currently, there are 21 staff members in IOET, of which one is an academician of CAS, ten Professors, five associate Professors and three assistant professors. On the other hand, 10 of the staff are supervisors of Ph.D. students and 8 supervisors of Master students. Over 90% of the staff are Ph.D. and 15 of them are under 45 years old, including Excellent Talents of China, New Century Excellent Talents (NCET) in University by Chinese Ministry of Education, Excellent Talent of Ministry of Railway, China. In the meantime, right now more than twenty Ph.D. candidates and seventy master students are studying here, playing a key role of solid, young and hard-working research team in BJTU.

IEOT is the main section of the Key Laboratory of Luminescence and Optical Information Technology, Chinese Ministry of Education. Here, there is one first-level doctoral research field of Optics Engineering and one second-level doctoral research field of Optics. In addition, there are four research fields for master degree studying, such as Optics Engineering, Condensed Matter Physics, Optics, and Materials Physics and Chemistry. Also, there is one research field of Optics Information Science and Technology for bachelors studying and it will be established to be Applied Physics for bachelors studying in future.

At present, researchers here can do inorganic and organic electroluminescent materials and devices, low-dimensional semiconductor physics, rare earth materials, the optical and electrical properties of materials characterization and its application in displays and memory devices, as well as their operation mechanisms.  

Till now, great achievements have been achieved in IOET. More than 70 projects have been approved since its foundation in 1997, including the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 program), major program, key program and general program of Natural National Science Foundation of China (NSFC), program of NCET and several application projects from companies, and the total funds are over 7.6 Million RMB. The completing quality of these projects is thought much of and most of those projects completed are praised highly with “A” or “excellent”. More than 210 papers have been published in international journals, which indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP. Also, 5 patents and 6 books have been issued and published, respectively.

As a rule in IOET, there is a group seminar each week. Frequently, international or national experts will present their talks here. IOET has succeeded in holding the 14th International Conference on Luminescence in July 2005, the 9th National Conference on Luminescence in 2001, and the 1st National Conference on Organic Luminescence and Laser in 1997. Till now, there are more than 45 persons/times attending international conferences held all over the world.

Since 1997, more than 10 post doctors, 40 doctors, 210 masters have graduated from IOET, and most of them have obtained all kinds of awards, such as Jianhao Award, Zhijin Award, IET Education Award, Excellent Ph.D. Award and Excellent Master Award, and so on. 

For the goal of “the first-level in the world”, all the staff and students in IOET are paving their steps toward a bright future with the spirit of unity, diligence, reality and novelty, having their bosoms filled with zeal and confidence.
