To implement the “Twelve-Five planning”, develop new field of interdisciplinary subjects and achieve the goal of the 10th congress of party representatives of establishing the world's first-class universities, Beijing Jiaotong University set up Academy of Fundamental and Interdisciplinary (AFIC) on May 3, 2013. The research team consists of staffs from School of Science, Electronic Information Engineering, Computer and Information Technology, Traffic and Transportation, Economics and Management who are engaged in researches on basic and interdisciplinary subjects. Now, the academy has three research centers: the research center of stochastic structure and data science, the research center of combination and optimization, the research center of bioinformatics and interdisciplinary.
The positioning and development directions: strengthening the integration between basic science and other characteristic disciplines such as information, management, transportation and engineering science; building some high-level creative teams; for major problems in those disciplines, researchers can jointly work and obtain distinct results; culturing a group of innovative talents in interdisciplinary; elevating overall strength of basic and engineering science in our university so as to reach the leading level in China and abroad.

The Research Center of Stochastic Structure and Data Science

In order to process mass data generated by information, management, transportation, biology and engineering research, the center mainly work on constructing statistic and stochastic model, applying high-speed computer to deal with all kinds of data which provide theoretical and technical supports for practical use. The center’s members have got various research results in the above fields. Hundreds of articles appeared in the related top journals. With the support from the National 973 Program and Natural Science Foundation of China and other national projects, one Second Class National Prize of Natural Science has been awarded no mention to several provincial science and technology awards.
The leader of the center is academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Ma Zhing-Ming. The skeleton researchers includes Doctor Wang Liqun from the Department of Statistics of University of Manitoba, Canada, Professor Shang Pengjian from School of Science, Professor Yu Jian from School of Computer and Information Technology, Professor Wang Jun, Professor Wang Jinting and Associate Professor Liu Yuting from School of Science.
The Detailed Research Direction
Inference in Population Genetics: utilizing DNA sequence data to infer and simulate genetic lineage. Constructing the stochastic process model to study the property of coalescent process with recombination and give interpretation of scientific basis in genetics.
Statistical analysis on transportation and economic data: mainly research on the data processing and simulation on transportation and economic & financial system, risk fluctuation analysis, optimal policy planning and other central complicated stochastic structure problems.
Machine Learning and its applications on bioinformatics and Chinese medicine informatization: the main problems relies on text cluster, detecting community and clustering analysis in complex networks, pattern discovery of biological sequence or networks and so on.

The Research Center of Combination and Optimization
Currently, with the rapid development of computer technology and information technology, combination and optimization are one of the most basic and supportive disciplines. The center mainly works on some scientific problems of coding and cryptology theory, symmetry of graphs, reliability of the network and optimization. In these areas, the center’s members have got various research results. Many articles appeared in the related top journals such as IEEE Transaction on Information Theory, IEEE Transaction on Computers, Transportation Research-Part B, Journal of Combinatorial Theory and Series A(B). Four achievements have been awarded by Ministry of Education. The members of the center also take several National Natural Science Foundation and other national research projects. Extensive cooperation and communication are under way with renowned universities and research institutions in Australia, Japan, Korea, Italy, Slovenia, etc.
The leader of the center is academician of the Korea Academy of Sciences and Engineering, National One-thousand-talent Plan winner, Professor Jin Ho Kwak. The skeleton researchers include Professor Chang Yanxun, Professor Feng Yanquan, Professor Hao Rongxia from School of Science, Professor Zhang Juliang from School of Economics and Management, Associate Professor Zhou Jinxin, Associate Professor Feng Tao and Associate Professor Zhang Chao from School of Science. The Detailed Research Direction
Coding and Cryptology Theory: the connection between combinational design and cryptology theory; using the method of combination design to construct error correcting code and key management system and to solve some information security problems in communication network.
Symmetry of graphs and reliability of the network: construction and classification of the high symmetry graphs such as arc-transitive graph and edge-transitive graph, and applied them to study the reliability and the fault tolerance of the network.
Optimization: optimization theory and algorithm and its application in compressed sensing, picture processing, data communication and transportation planning

The Research Center of Bioinformatics and Interdisciplinary

The center mainly study on some important scientific problems of biological information and biological interdisciplinary. There are many papers published in top journals of the related field, such as American Journal of Human Genetics, Bioinformatics, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Human Genetics, Journal of Materials Chemistry and Advanced Materials, etc. The members of the center also take several National Natural Science Foundation and other national research projects. Extensive cooperation and communication are under way with renowned American universities and research institutions in American.
The leader of the center is our school’s visiting professor, Tulane university professor Deng Hongwen. The skeleton researchers include Professor Hong Tao from School of Science, Professor Lin Boliang from school of Traffic and Transportation, ProfessorXiuNaihua, Associate Professor Peng Hongshang, Associate ProfessorZhang Lishu and Associate Professor Kong Lingchenfrom School of Science.
The Detailed Research Direction
