College of Life Sciences and Bioengineering of Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) was founded in September 2008; it was developed on the basis of the Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, established in July 2003 headed by Dr. Hong Tao, member of Chinese academy of Engineering (CAE), chief expert on Molecular Virology and Biomedical Ultrastructure. The present college is headed by Dr. Chen Zhinan the president of this college, member of CAE, chief expert on Cellular Biology and Biopharmacy, Dr. Hong Tao is nominated as the Honorary President and Dr. He Jinsheng, expert on Immunology and Virology, as the Deputy President.

The college is temporarily allocated on the 2nd floor of the Teaching Building 2 in the main campus of the university, occupying a space around 2000 M2. Within the college, there are three institutes being set up; they are: the Institute of Genetic Engineering, Institute of Cell and Protein Engineering, and Institute of Bioinformatics and Biomedical Ultrastructures. The present scope of research has been focused on novel mucosal vaccine against respiratroy syncytial virus, drug development on and mechanism of viral diseases, tumors and neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimers Disease (AD), as well as structure and function of biomacromolecules, etc.

The college possesses a strong working team, two academicians, one chair professor, five full professors, eleven associate professors and two technicians. All the research fellows have obtained their doctorate degree and most of them have studied abroad.

Currently, there are one master’s degree program in Biology covering Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Biophysics, Genetics, Cell Biology and Microbiology etc. The doctorate degree program in Biology is being constructed.

Along with the financial support from the university, a series of research projects including National Major Scientific and Technological Special Project for "AIDS and Viral Hepatitis and Other Major Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control" and for “Significant New Drugs Development”, are being carried out. There are also many projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation.
