Combine Knowledge and Practice, Foster Outstanding Students
      Basic Disciplinary Experimental Class, which uses the professional name of “Experimental Class of the Sciences” in admissions, is also known as ZhixingProgram--the interdisciplinary educational reform experimental class at Beijing Jiaotong University. To produce curious, brilliant, and creative future trailblazers and famous scholars, the plan of this class revolves around the nurturing of research ability, creativity and practice ability, relies upon School of Building and Civil Engineering and two national-level experimental education demonstration centers and strengthens the combination of teaching, self-learning, scientific research and training. 
 
Dive in Math, Nurture Personality
Freshmen enrolled in “ZhixingProgram” will learn the basics in their first year, select courses through the “Broad foundation Platform” and take part in wide caliber education. General education, edification of the Humanities and fundamental mathematical and physics knowledge would be of extreme importance to nurture abstract thinking and excellence in math and physics. In their second academic year, students will be divided-based on their own wishes-into different majors (Engineering Mechanics, Math and Applied Math, Applied Physics and Bioinformatics) and complete corresponding courses via unique educational plans. Enforcing a dynamic management, the program allows students to transfer to ordinary program if they cannot adept the path of the Zhixing Program.
 
Led by Academicians, Undergrad to Masters
Main courses of Zhixing Program are taught by exceptional teachers, who advocate research education to enhance students to finish specialty training and self-learning. Since the second term of freshmen year, mentors (academicians, famous professors and Zhangjiang Scholars) will provide specific guidance on course selection, learning strategies and future directions. Freshmen can also participate in their mentor’s research projects. Starting from their sophomore years, students can design professional courses related to their studies with advice from their mentors and nurture their interest and enthusiasm in scientific research. As long as they fill requirements of recommendation and exam-exemption, outstanding students can acquire qualifications of pursuing Master’s Degree and Doctorate Degrees without tuition. Master’s and Doctorate students can also gain chances to communicate and exchange and study abroad.
 
Brief Introduction on Engineering Mechanics Major:
Engineering Mechanics Major relies upon first discipline subject, Mechanics, and Beijing key subject, Solid Mechanics, inherits the spirit of Mechanic expert QianXuesen, focuses on basic mathematical mechanic theories and engineering education and emphasizes the fusion of mechanic scientific rules and other subjects of natural science and engineering. To produce future engineering scientists with wide perspectives, profound professional knowledge, unique personalities, this program stresses the understanding in practical experience, mathematical solutions of engineering problems, scientific foundations of engineering technology, and the grasp of design and application.
Led by “Specially invited Changjiang scholar” Wang Yuesheng, students can enjoy the privileges of having a particularly strong staff. Students face wide job opportunities for their excellent qualities. Jobs of previous graduates include careers in scientific research institutes; research, technology development, program designs, management, testing and calculations in industries including aerospace, national defense, energy, transportation, shipping, materials, biotechnology, engineering and civil building, machinery, water conservancy and chemical industry; relative work in fields such as educations, finance and commerce.
 
Brief Introduction on Mathematics and applied mathematics Major

Mathematics is the basis of all natural sciences and is widely applicable in scientific technologies. After the invention of computers, mathematics is increasingly important in the cutting edge technology and the demand for mathematic talents is spreading fast and wide. Mathematics and applied mathematics is one of the mainstream majors in Beijing Jiaotong University. Led by Academician Ma Zhiming and “Thousand-people” plan Korean academician of Science Kwak, staff resources is extremely abundant and subjects comprehensive. With Authorized Doctorate-Degree of first degree discipline and Beijing Key interdisciplinary subject information operation and 5 Authorized Masters-Degree of second degree discipline (Fundamental Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics and Operational Research and Cybernetics), this program aimed to produce students who master basic theories of mathematics and science, use computer to solve practical issues, finish research, educational tasks and management in departments of science, education, and economics.

Students are expected to: learn fundamental theories of math and applied math, basic methods, mathematics models, computers and math software; possess excellent education on both math and applied math; acquire good scientific qualities and strong creativity; gain abilities in scientific research, education, problem-solving and software designing etc.

 
Brief Introduction on Applied Physics Major:
Applied Physics combines sciences and engineering, focuses more on sciences and in the meantime, emphasis experiment skills, professional knowledge and practical abilities. Creativity, adaptation, systematic analysis and strong practical application are also of importance. Applied Physics has a high quality staff composed of academicians, national level teachers and China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists. Major research areas include Optics, Optic Engineering, Condensed Matters Physics and Theoretical Physics, with Optic Engineering as one of Beijing’s Key Subjects.
 
Brief Introduction of Information and Bioinformatics Major:
    
Bioinformatics is a relatively new discipline formed by intersecting Biology, Computer Science, and Applied Mathematics. Through acquiring, processing, storing, searching and analyzing biological experiment data (mainly nucleotide and amino acid sequence data, microarray data, mass spectrometry data, bio molecular interaction data and biological macromolecular structure data), scientists can reveal the true meaning underlying the data collected. It is one of the vital powers to push modern biology, medicine and physic.
   
The staff team, headed by Chinese Academy of Engineering academician Hong Tao and academician Chen Zhinan, focuses on fundamental biomedical and its application and the pathogenesis and interference of major diseases. Equipped with refined conditions for research in Biology, Biomedicine and Bioinformatics, the team harvestedfruitful discoveries in many areas, such as cancer genomics, genetic studies on osteoporosis, the new vaccine development, biomarker discovery and characterization protein structure.
      Bioinformatics is one of the latest research hotspots and is of huge importance in Developed countries where demands for such expertise is very high. This discipline is arranged in the national long-term technology development plan and twelfth five-year plan and is also continuously supported in the plans of “973” and “863”. Expertise in Bioinformatics faces fine job opportunities and has great appeal in information management, product development and fundamental research in Biology, Physic and Medicine.
