The Department of Mathematics at Beijing Jiaotong University was founded in 1986. Now the department has 65 faculty members, of whom 13 are full professors, 3 are part-time professors (including one Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), 34 are associate professors, and more than 30 hold Ph.D. degrees.

The department has the right to confer Doctoral degrees in two subjects: “Operations Research and Cybernetics” and “System Theory”. Post-doctoral fellowships are offered in these subjects and Master programs in primary subjects of Mathematics are offered by the department as well. More than 10 PhD candidates and 50 Master candidates are enrolled each year. Undergraduate programs on two majors, i.e., “Information and Computational Sciences” and “Mathematics and Applied mathematics”, are provided. The former program was established in 1999, and about 150 students enrolled each year.

All the faculty members of the department are committed themselves to the teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates. These students come from not only the Mathematics department but also the other departments at BJTU, including even those from distance education colleges and night classes. Due to their excellent teaching work, 1 faculty member won the award “Excellent Teachers in Beijing” and more than 20 won honorary title “Excellent Teachers at BJTU”.

Most faculty members of the department have extensive research interests. Since 2004, the department has been financially supported by National Natural Science Foundations for more than 20 items, by "863" program for 1 item, by “Fok Ying Tung” Education Foundations for 1 item, by Foundations of Excellent Young Teachers of National Universities for 2 items, and by Foundations of the Ministry of Education for 10 items. The department has also won several national prizes, such as the Natural Sciences Prize from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Education.

The department has regular academic exchanges and co-operations with many universities and research institutes all over the world, such as University of Waterloo, University of Messina, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Hirosaki University, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and City University of Hong Kong, etc.
