         Without substantial basis in the Sciences, one can hardly become a first class scientist; without first class Science departments, a University cannot become a great University. It was for this aim that the School of Science was founded in August 1998, consisting of five second Discipline Departments: the Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, Institute of Optoelectronic Technology, and the College of Life Sciences and Bioengineering.
Since its birth, the School of Science had emphasized discipline constructions, focused on faculty teambuilding, depended on facility improvements and relied on system developments. Constantly seeking to deepen the effects of reform, the School of Science achieved much success in developing faculty, discipline constructions, teaching research, personnel training and scientific research.
Up till now, there are 216 faculty of all of the School of Science, including 173 full time teachers, 5 Academicians from Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 Recruitment Program of Foreign Experts, 1 National Distinguished Teacher, 2 Elists, 50 professors, 83 associate professors and senior engineers, 43 doctoral tutor, 78 master tutors. Among full time teachers, 80% have a doctorate degree, 52.6% have studied abroad for at least 6 months.
    
The School has led the construction of 4 doctorate authorization first degree disciplines includingmathematics, physics, optical engineering and statistics; assisted in building 2 doctorate authorization disciplineof system science and electronic science and technology; led the construction of 6 Master's degree authorization disciplines ofmathematical, physics, optical engineering, statistics, biology, chemical engineering and technology; has two post-doctoral flow station of optical engineering and mathematics. There are 3 undergraduate majors: photoelectric information science and engineering, information and computation science, material chemistry. In 2005, the School of Science started to recruit science experimental class -- the “Siyuan” Program; and in 2013, began to recruit "Zhixing Program". In 2013, the first Chinese-foreign cooperation of undergraduateproject of our university-- the "nano materials and technology" program between the School of Science and the University of Waterloo in Canada, was approved by the Ministry of Education. At present, the School has 2053 students, including 1435 undergraduates, 455 postgraduates, and 163 doctorate students. Talent training qualities have been improved steadily in the school. In recent years, the rate of undergraduate studies has been ranked highest in the university, 2013 undergraduate study rate was 61.3%, and 2 doctorate students won the National Excellent Doctoral dissertations. In addition, the School of Science and the University of Waterloo in Canada, University of Western Ontario in Canada, University of Minnesota in USA, Bermingham in British and other foreign famous University signed a "2+2" or "3+1+1" agreement on cooperation to provides a very good platformfor undergraduate to study abroad.
The school now has a national experiment teaching demonstration center, and the luminescence and optical information technology Key Laboratory of the Ministry of education. Total laboratory area of 6488 square meters, equipment assets of nearly about 59000000, has more than 30equipment that cost more than 300000RMB a piece.
The school has made remarkable achievements in teaching and scientific research. It has won 1 national teaching achievement special award, two second prize awards and has assumed major national science and technology projects, the Major State Basic Research Development Program of China (973 Program) and National High Technology Research & Development Program of China (863 Program), National Outstanding Youth Fund, National Science Foundation research project etc. Duringthe "Tenth Five Year Plan", scientific research contract funds of the school are 4.6 times that of its funds during the “ninth five year plan". The School of Science won "eleventh five" scientific research projects for a total of 488 projects, scientific research funds of about 141439700 RMB, which is 1.9 times that of its funds during the “Tenth Five Year Plan". During the  "eleventh five year plan", the School of Science published 563 SCI papers, accounting for 39% of the total number of university, 2 provincial science and technology first award prize,1 second prize. In order to carry out fundamental and interdisciplinary research, Beijing Jiaotong University Academy of Fundamental and Interdisciplinary was established in 2013.
The School has formed a number of distinct features of the subject research direction, trained andemployed a number of young experts and academic leaders, and formed a new pattern based mainly on fundamental science research, and the development of the interdisciplinary. The Staff of the School of science worked hard and forged ahead to construct the School of Science into a training base, a platformto support other school discipline developments, and a sourceof the university’s newly emerging interdisciplinary departments.
