Title: Seeing molecules and their dynamics by making “molecular movies” using femtosecond laser pulses
Guest Speaker: Dr. Joe Sanderson (University of Waterloo) Time: 2014-11-19 (Wednesday), 14:30 - 16:00 Location: Conference Room 7215, School of Science Abstract Ever since the birth of photography in the latter part of the nineteenth century, we have sought to build apparatuses which allow us to see faster and faster processes and on smaller and smaller scales. Massively stimulated by the development of the laser, in the middle of the 20th century and latterly by the advances in pulses laser technology, we are now achieving unprecedented levels of detail and are able to image the dynamics of single molecules on a femtosecond timescale and with angstrom spatial resolution. In a talk designed for a general physics audience, I will explain our experimental method, talk about some interesting points of history, some of my own inspiration and some of our latest results.
