The department of physics of Beijing Jiaotong University was established in 1960 and came into its present name in 1986.

The Department is approved by Ministry of Education, PRC of conferring PhD for Optical Engineering and Optics, and MSc for Physics, Physics Electronics, Material Physics and Chemistry. The PhD programs encompass researches in the field of optoelectronic measurement, all-optical network and all-optical signal, laser technology and so on. Until now, there are 6-8 PhD candidates enlisted as PhD graduates. The MSc programs consist of 8 research directions, mainly focusing on subjects of condensed matter physics, optophysics, electronic devices and integrated system. Annually, approximate 60 graduates obtain degree from the Department.

In terms of undergraduate education, the Department of Physics includes two majors, such as, Applied Physics, and Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering. To be more detailed, Applied Physics is with two branches: electronic techniques and electronic material; Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering with three branches: optoelectronic measurement technology, optical fiber communication technology and display technology. The department enlists 150 undergraduates or so annually.

In addition to teaching physics majors, the Department also provides physics courses and experiments for other majors as the host of the National Centre of Basic Course Teaching in Engineering Program. With a long history of physics teaching and researching, the Department accumulated abundant experience and becomes one of the leading physics departments in engineering physics nationwide.

Now the Department has 62 employees, including 1 academician from CAS, 1 National Renowned Teacher, 15 full professors and 28 associate professors. Since the establishment, not only the staffs have devoted to key programs from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and “863” program, but also have extended their connections abroad to many world-class institutions. And their major research interest are in laser and optoelectronic measurement technology, optical information transmission and light signal processing, optical physics, laser technology, condensed matter physics, and theoretical physics.

Equipped with advanced equipments, the Department now takes up an area of up to 3000 square meters for teaching and experimenting. Its Teaching and Experimenting Centre of Physics is one of the first national exemplary centres. There is a key laboratory of Luminescence and Optical Information, Ministry of Education homed here.
